Problem. Let \(G\) have vertex set \(\mathbb{Z}/127\mathbb{Z}\), with distinct vertices \(x\) and \(y\) adjacent when \(x-y\) is a nonzero cube modulo \(127\). What is the exact value of the independence number \(\alpha(G)\)?

Definitions and notation

1Problem setup

Remark 1. The nonzero cubes form a 42-element subset of Z/127Z and are closed under negation, so the adjacency relation is undirected.

Definition 1. An independent set contains no adjacent pair.

2What counts as a solution

  • Give an independent set and a certificate that no larger independent set exists.

What counts as a solution

Saved solution (The independence number is 11). An explicit independent 11-set meets an exhaustive colored branch-and-bound exclusion of every independent 12-set.[2]

Verification

Let \[ C=\{z^3:z\in\mathbf F_{127}^{\times}\} \] and join distinct \(x,y\) when \(x-y\in C\). The set \[ W=\{10,13,27,41,44,55,70,85,96,111,126\} \] is independent. Direct modular evaluation checks all \(\binom{11}{2}=55\) pairs and finds no difference in \(C\), so \(\alpha(G)\geq11\).

An independent set in \(G\) is a clique in \(\overline G\). The executable artifact `cgr127-artifact-exhaustive-size-12-search` performs a complete clique search in \(\overline G\). Its greedy coloring bound is valid at every branch and the run finds no clique of order 12. Any independent set with more than 12 vertices would contain an independent 12-subset, so this proves \(\alpha(G)\leq11\). Therefore \[ \boxed{\alpha(G)=11}. \]

This value was already known in computational Ramsey theory. Radziszowski's 2009 summary explicitly gives independence number 11 for the Hill-Irving graph \(G_{127}\). The independent artifact here supplies a short replay against the precise vertex and edge convention in the candidate.

Notes and companion material

This is a 127-vertex maximum-independent-set instance with arithmetic symmetry. A solver can normalize one chosen vertex to 0 and store rejected branches as subsets of residue orbits.

Original intake status. Status unknown. No literature search was performed. Cubic-residue Cayley graphs have certainly been studied, so novelty and open status require checking.

  • Search cubic-residue graphs, generalized Paley graphs, and exact independence numbers before spending a large branch-and-bound budget.
  • Translation and multiplication by a cube give a large automorphism group that should be fixed during search.

Recorded example 1. The set {10,13,27,41,44,55,70,85,96,111,126} is independent.

Computational notes

  • An exact modular check verified the displayed independent set of size 11. A randomized greedy search over 3000 starts found no larger set. A floating-point eigenvalue calculation gave least adjacency eigenvalue approximately -7.750637; any Hoffman-bound certificate must replace that numerical value with rigorous arithmetic.
