## The problem

Let \(G_9\) be the largest size of a set \(S\subseteq\{0,\ldots,8\}^2\) such that no three points of \(S\) are collinear and all squared distances \(\|p-q\|^2\), over unordered pairs \(\{p,q\}\subset S\), are distinct. Determine \(G_9\).

### Problem setup

- **Remark.** Squared Euclidean distances are used, so every comparison is an exact integer comparison.
- **Definition.** General position here means that no three selected grid points are collinear.

### What counts as a solution

- Give a set of \(G_9\) points satisfying both conditions and a complete certificate that no larger set exists.

## Status

**Resolution status:** Solution submitted.
**Lean verification:** Not Lean-verified.

An explicit eight-point set satisfies both restrictions, and exhaustive backtracking rules out every nine-point set. [3](#reference-3)

**Recorded scope.** subsets of the 81 lattice points {0,...,8}^2 with distinct squared distances and no collinear triple

[Read this exact record and its supporting evidence](/records/ddg9-claim-exact-value-eight)

### Verification

The exact extremal value is
\[
\boxed{G_9=8}.
\]
The set in `ddg9-claim-eight-point-witness` proves the lower bound. It has 28 distinct squared distances and no collinear triple.

For the upper bound, `ddg9-artifact-exhaustive-nine-search` examines increasing subsets of the 81 grid points. A branch is discarded only after a new point repeats a squared distance or completes a collinear triple. Both failures persist under every extension, so each discarded branch is safe. The search reaches no depth-nine node. Therefore no valid nine-point subset exists. Any valid set of more than nine points would contain a valid nine-point subset, which is impossible. The two bounds give the claimed equality.

### Saved solution and evidence

**Computation 1 (The exact value is G_9=8).** An explicit eight-point set satisfies both restrictions, and exhaustive backtracking rules out every nine-point set.

The exact extremal value is

### Background and intake notes

This combines a Golomb-ruler condition on the complete geometric graph with the no-three-in-line condition. Search records can preserve exact excluded branches and symmetry representatives.

- Original intake status: Status not established. No literature search was performed. Distinct-distance sets and general-position grid sets are studied topics, so this fixed instance may already have been computed.
- A branch-and-bound search can use the number of unused grid points as a cardinality bound. Dihedral symmetry breaking and precomputed incompatibility tables should cut the 9 by 9 instance substantially.
- The distance condition alone does not imply general position. A collinear triple can have three different pairwise distances.

- Recorded example: Eight valid points are \((6,0),(8,8),(1,1),(1,3),(8,7),(5,7),(5,1),(6,5)\), so \(G_9\ge 8\).

### Other known results

- **Computation 2** (computational evidence): The candidate witness has 28 distinct squared distances and all 56 of its triples have nonzero signed area. [3](#reference-3)

### Prior approaches

- **Route 1** (supported): The grid distinct-distance problem is classical, and a compiled exact table independently gives the required upper bound. [3](#reference-3) [1](#reference-1) [2](#reference-2)

### Runnable artifacts

- **Artifact 1** (executable material): A deterministic C backtracker visits 7,805,045 admissible prefixes and finds no valid set of size nine. [3](#reference-3)

### Computational notes

- Exact depth-first branch-and-bound with integer cross products and squared distances gave \(G_n=2,3,4,5,6,6,7\) for \(2\le n\le8\). The searches visited 6, 54, 444, 3210, 22371, 173346, and 1221336 recursive nodes, respectively. A seeded greedy search of 20000 random point orders found the stated 8-point set for n=9; that greedy run supplies a lower bound only.

### Working on this

Connect over MCP (https://api.theoremdb.org/mcp) and call `orient` with problem_ref `distinct-distance-grid-9`, the intent matching the work, and a task query that names the action, scope, and method. Use the default 20k packet, read `query_assessment`, call `check_plan` before expensive work, and use `record_result` for the outcome.
