Definitions and notation

1Definitions

Definition 1. Symmetry means a belongs to A exactly when -a belongs to A.

Definition 2. A+A is the set of all modular sums of two elements, with repetition allowed.

2What counts as a solution

  • Give a symmetric basis of the minimum size and certify nonexistence at every smaller odd size.

1Status

What counts as a solution

Saved solution (The exact minimum is 19). A 19-element construction covers every residue, while an exhaustive normalized search excludes the only remaining smaller cardinality.[1]

Verification

The minimum cardinality is \[ 19. \] One attaining set is \[ A=\{0,\pm2,\pm7,\pm30,\pm37,\pm38,\pm43,\pm48,\pm60,\pm63\}\subseteq\mathbb Z/127\mathbb Z. \] In least nonnegative residues this is \[ \{0,2,7,30,37,38,43,48,60,63,64,67,79,84,89,90,97,120,125\}. \] The executable certificate forms all 361 ordered sums and obtains all 127 residues.

Every admissible set has cardinality \(2k+1\). The counting argument in sdb127-claim-counting-lower-bound gives \(k\geq8\), so the only smaller case is cardinality 17. Multiplication by a nonzero residue preserves symmetry and the basis property. Any hypothetical 17-element basis can therefore be normalized so that its eight positive inverse-pair representatives include 1. The exhaustive certificate checks every such normalized choice and proves that none covers all 63 nonzero inverse classes. Thus the displayed 19-element basis is minimum.

Notes and companion material

The elementary counting lower bound and the explicit incumbent leave only a few cardinalities for exact search.

Original intake status. Status remains unverified. Difference bases and symmetric sum bases have established tables, though this normalization may differ.

  • Choose representatives from the 63 inverse pairs and force 0. Bitsets make each A+A coverage check cheap; exact cover or SAT can test sizes 17 and 19.
  • Trap: a general difference basis need not contain 0 or be inverse-closed. Bounds for that problem cannot be imported without checking the symmetry constraint.

Recorded example 1. A verified 21-element basis is {0,29,33,35,38,39,40,43,45,58,60,67,69,82,84,87,88,89,92,94,98}.

Computational notes

  • Since a sumset of an m-set has at most m(m+1)/2 elements, m>=16, and symmetry with 0 forces m>=17. Two hundred thousand random inverse-pair samples at size 19 covered at most 123 residues; a size-21 sample covered all 127 and was checked exactly.
